In the unfortunate case where the car ends up in need of repair, the Cobalt is one of the cheapest fixes there is. It would be advisable to avoid years 2005 to 2008 as they have the most problematic versions with problems that range from power steering failure, a transmission that grinds when shifting and the key getting stuck. If you can make these replacements to your Cobalt you should be able to increase its longevity a little more. The electrical power steering issues did result in a recall in 2010 for which GM addressed the issues however there are still some complaints about it here and there. A problem with the ignition lock cylinder itself also can cause the ignition key to be stuck meaning the ignition lock cylinder will need replacing. The solution to this problem is the replacement of the whole shifter assembly. The micro switch is responsible for sending a signal when the transmission is in the park. The ignition key can get stuck because of an issue with the microswitch inside the shifter mechanism. If the matter pops up it is worth replacing all four fuel injectors and reprogramming the PCM. There are faulty fuel injectors in the 2.4L engine, which could cause the check engine light to switch on. Not sure what to think of this but it has me reconsidering getting the manual (I love driving stick).Conclusion on How Many Miles can a Chevy Cobalt Last Chevy Cobalt Common Problems I Googled the problem to see what I could find and low and behold there were some threads with lots of people complaining about this problem (apparently GM hasn't recalled any, and it doesn't seem to be driver error). Now, I was just looking at some reviews for the Cobalt and stumbled across one that the guy said the clutch keeps going out every 10,000 to 15,000 km. It was a fun car, handled decently, and was comfortable. But, they had a Cobalt 2LT with an automatic in stock so I test drove that instead. Unfortunately, the 5 spd manual I was looking at was sold yesterday and wasn't there anymore so I couldn't test drive it. My biggest suggestion: if you get a LS - get the GM accessory armrest installed (or do it yourself - it's very easy). It's not sporty, it's not fast or quick, nor is it striking, filled with upscale materials, or cutting-edge technology. I really do not think one can go wrong purchasing a Cobalt for just getting from point A to B, especially that of a college student's daily grind. She's obviously still driving it and has no plans to part with it. Her parents later purchased a new 2009 for her younger sister in the summer of 2009 for her senior year in college. It was never in service for build quality issues, nor any mechanical problems. It took everything in stride, abeit, quite blandly, but it served its purpose as a reliable appliance. It had been through all four seasons, through the rolling hills of Happy Valley, through 6 lanes of bumper to bumper beltway traffic, etc. We kept that car through the Spring of 2008 when the lease was up.
